There is no suggestion that we will speed up when completing the rally. Still, it is better to be prepared, so I researched how much the carabinieri will want off us if we stray a few km/h over the limit.

Speeding fines in European countries vary significantly depending on the country, the severity of the violation, and whether the driver is local or foreign.

Fixed Fines vs. Income-Based Fines

Some countries, like Switzerland, calculate fines based on the offender’s income, which can lead to very high penalties for wealthy individuals.

Others, like France, Germany, and Italy, impose fixed fines based on the speed exceeded.

Severity Levels

Fines increase significantly for higher speeds over the limit (e.g., 20 km/h over the limit vs. 50 km/h over the limit). Extreme speeding may result in license suspension, mandatory driving courses, or even jail time.

Foreign Drivers

EU-wide agreements allow countries to pursue speeding fines across borders. For example, a French speeding ticket can be enforced in Germany, and vice versa.

Enforcement Trends

Speed Cameras: Widely used across Europe.

On-the-Spot Fines: Common in countries like Spain, where police can issue and collect fines immediately.

Cross-Border Enforcement: EU countries have agreements to enforce fines for foreign drivers.

Country-Specific Information

France

Urban Areas: 50 km/h is the typical limit.

Fines: €68 for minor offences (up to 20 km/h over) and up to €1,500 for extreme cases.

Speeding over 50 km/h may result in an immediate license suspension.

Germany

Autobahn: No general speed limit, but “advisory” speed is 130 km/h. Speeding in restricted zones can incur fines.

Fines: €10 (minor offences) to €680+ (serious speeding).

Other Penalties: Points in the driver’s license registry and possible suspension.

Switzerland

Strict Policies: Very high fines based on income.

Speeding can lead to fines exceeding €1,000 or even imprisonment for extreme violations.

Cameras are widely used.

Italy

Urban and Motorway Limits: 50 km/h in cities, 130 km/h on motorways.

Fines: Range from €42 for small infractions to €3,200+ for severe offences.

Night Penalties: Fines increase by 30% for offences between 10 PM and 7 AM.
